Hoffnung für Anfänger*innen? Gedichte aus dem Unterricht

Zur Vorbereitung auf das Abitur lernen wir im Englischunterricht verschiedene Stilmittel kennen: Allegorie, Alliteration, Anapher – und die Liste geht weiter.  Am besten lernen wir an Beispielen aus der Literatur. So haben wir letzte Woche die amerikanische Schriftstellerin Emily Dickinson (1830-1886) gelesen, vor allem ihr Gedicht Hope / Hoffnung (um 1861), um die Metapher zu verstehen: 

“Hope is thing with feathers…  / Hoffnung ist ein Ding mit Federn…”

Studierende benutzten Dickinsons Gedicht als Struktur aber erfanden ihre eigene Metaphern: die Hoffnung ist ein Ding mit… Es zeigt sich, dass die Hoffnung viele Facetten hat.

Hope is the thing with a hook

that lies

and keeps the thing going,

with a treat at the end of the line.

The unknown that happens.

When the line breaks it doesn’t stop the flow.

There’s always a line 

with a bigger treat, fish or hook.

There are so many treats, fish and hooks out there.

It’s unknown where they are or where they 

are going.

Alone without anything.

The thing keeps going.

Yellow and bright

A feast for the heart.


Being carried by the wind, 

Its tidings of more.

Roots stretching down,

Gathering might.

It’s been a year since he has passed, but we will still persist,

looking how we will grow is all there ever is.
